Berkshire County Fire LODD
FD Support
- Determine if the fire department will be requiring assistance from the BCFCA LODD team
- Determine what level of assistance will be required
- Notify all members of the fire department of the LODD
- Notify local town officials, and other local fire chiefs – departments
- Obtain employee forms
- Identify a department liaison
- Notify Fire Marshals office of incident 978-567-3100
- Contact Fire Marshals office for ISU (508) 820-2000
- Appoint sector commanders for the fire scene, family support, fire department support, and the funeral
- Determine a frequent time and location where sector coordinators can meet.
- Ensure coordination between fire marshal’s office & medical examiner so firefighters autopsy protocol’s are followed (important for benefits).
- Determine if local department wishes to be relieved of the fire scene and mutual aid to assist
- Determine if the department is still able to respond to incidents
- Determine who is the carrier for fire department insurance and contact them
- Arrange for mutual aid fire & EMS coverage if the department is unable to respond
- Consider the condition of adjacent departments ability to respond
- Request A fire department chaplain either locally or from DFS, or both
- Request DFS assistance in applying for state benefits
- Begin immediate pursuit of local benefits (town or dept. insurance)
- Begin immediate pursuit of federal benefits PSOB 1-888-744-6513
- Contact fire department or town attorney, apprise them of the situation
- Establish a hospital liaison if applicable
- Contact the National Fallen Fire fighter foundation 301-447-1365 fax 301-447-1645 or email firehero@erols.com advise request assistance from the chief to chief network
- Advise family the Lighthouse uniform company will provide a free Class A dress uniform to any fire fighter killed in the line of duty the only cost is the freight to ship it which will be billed to the department 800-426-5225 or http://www.lighthouseuniform.com
- Fire Department debriefings – include police, ambulance personnel, and dispatchers
- Manage media effectively- prepare for national media- regular press releases
- Notify Mass. Call Volunteer, or PFFM, IAFF as appropriate
- Funeral preparation as outlined in Chaplain guide or family wishes
- Have dispatch center prepare teletype to fire departments
- Contact Mass Fire Chiefs, W.Mass Fire Chiefs, NE fire Chiefs, or IAFC as appropriate
- Determine if the department is still able & willing to respond to calls
- If not begin a rotating list of mutual aid coverage for fire & EMS calls
- Ensure coverage for key times such as wake and funeral
- Prepare regular media releases
- Critical incident stress debriefings
- Use systematic method of mutual aid coverage for regular calls if needed

- Local liaisons familiar with the area to work with mutual aid companies
